With the passing of California Senate Bill 1383, the Woodland Food Closet has joined the Edible Food Recovery Program in an effort to keep edible food out of landfills. SB 1383, which went into effect in 2022, requires cities to recycle organic waste and participate in food recovery programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a press release from the Woodland Volunteer Food Closet. Since the Food Closet began participation in the food recovery program in April, the organization has collected and distributed over 11,000 pounds of edible food.
